I. Teaching Methods Observed in the Classroom
From my observation during the practicum, each class usually starts with a consistent routine. Before the lesson begins, students first do a short prayer, followed by greeting the teacher.
After that, the teacher begins the lesson with a short ice-breaking activity, which takes around
five minutes and helps students prepare for learning.
The teaching method is mainly lecture-based. The teacher explains the lesson by writing example sentences on the board and giving clear explanations. Although the class is not highly interactive and does not include games or group activities during the lesson, students are still engaged through question-and-answer sessions. The teacher also uses English as the main language of instruction, with more English than Indonesian when explaining the material.
II. Learning materials and innovation
In most lessons, the main learning material used is the textbook, which follows the curriculum structure. The teacher often refers to it when explaining grammar points and example sentences and supports the explanation by writing on the board.
In terms of innovation, Kahoot is used at the end of each lesson as a short quiz activity. It is used as a simple and enjoyable way to review the lesson content and check students’ understanding.
III. Learning resources and classroom technology
The school provides sufficient technology to support teaching and learning. Each classroom is equipped with a projector and a computer, which are used by teachers to present lessons more clearly. The school also provides internet access to support digital learning activities.
Although students usually do not use mobile phones during school hours because they are collected in the morning, they are allowed to use them in certain lessons when the teacher gives permission, especially for learning activities such as Kahoot.
IV. Authentic assessment in the classroom
The assessment system consists mainly of midterm and final examinations, which are used as formal assessments in the school.
In addition, students are also evaluated through assignments and homework, which contribute to their overall grades. After lessons, playing Kahoot as a quiz are sometimes used as a form of formative assessment to quickly check students’ understanding in an interactive way.
V. Others
From my observation, the classroom environment is well-structured and disciplined.
Students always start the class by greeting the teacher and participating in a short prayer,
which helps create a respectful learning atmosphere.
Although the teaching approach is mostly traditional and focuses on explanation,
the use of digital tools such as Kahoot and classroom technology like projectors helps make
the learning process more engaging and supportive for students.
