Sekolah Menengah Pertama Laboratory School (SMP Labschool)
Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) Bandung, Indonesia.
The school is located at Jl. Senjayaguru, Kampus UPI Bandung, Sukasari District, Bandung, West Java.
During my practicum at SMP Labschool UPI Bandung, I had the opportunity to explore the school environment and learn how the system supports students both academically and personally.
From what I observed, the school provides not only knowledge but also strong character development.
SMP Labschool UPI Bandung is a laboratory school under Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), where innovative teaching methods are applied in real classroom settings. The school focuses on developing students’ intellectual, social, and emotional skills.
The junior high school level consists of 11 classes in total

4 classes in Grade 7

3 classes in Grade 8

4 classes in Grade 9
The classes are divided into four types: A, B, C, and D

Class A: Bilingual program (Indonesian and English)

Class B: Tauhid (Tauhiid) program focusing on Islamic studies and character development

Classes C and D: Regular classes following the national curriculum
I noticed that each type of class has its own learning style, which makes the teaching and learning process more interesting.
The school is well-equipped with modern facilities such as classrooms, laboratories, a library,
sports fields, counseling rooms, and places of worship. These facilities help create a comfortable
learning environment for students.
In terms of academic support, I found that teachers are very friendly and approachable.
Students can ask questions freely and receive extra help when they have difficulties.
The school also uses digital tools and e-learning platforms, which make learning more flexible
and engaging. From my observation, students often use their mobile phones to participate in interactive activities such as ZEP Quiz and Kahoot.This made the lessons more fun and encouraged students to be more active in class. Moreover, Guidance counseling is also available to support students in both their studies and personal development.
The teaching system follows the national curriculum and focuses on student-centered learning.
Teachers use different methods such as group work and interactive activities to make lessons
more enjoyable. Classes usually start at 7:15 a.m., and each class lasts about 45 minutes.
During the Ramadan period, the schedule is adjusted to suit the students.
The school also offers a variety of extracurricular activities, such as Angklung, English Club,
Japanese Club, basketball, and music club. These activities help students promote other skills.
Another thing that impressed me was the school culture. Students practice morning routines such as
reading the Quran, and there are programs like “Pecimas” that encourage them to connect with
religious values. The school also promotes the “BAKU” character, which means being kind and strong.
Overall, I was really impressed by the balance between academic learning, modern technology, and
character development at this school. It created a positive and supportive environment that made
my teaching experience both enjoyable and meaningful.
